The Wine & Water barge is a hidden treasure that has yet to be fully discovered. The humorous French captain named Max, is native to the Dijon area. He shared his stories and knowledge of local history and wine. His British bride Beatrice, shared her scrumptious cuisine and extraordinary service to our family.
We are a family of four and though this type of vacation is not especially designed for children, Max and Beatrice tailored the holiday to meet my kids demanding needs! Small bowls of treats were left by their bedside and at the breakfast table in the morning. They’re nurturing grandparent approach was a lovely touch but their energy level was far from grandparent like…. They were both constantly (and discreetly) addressing the needs of our family and the boat.
Though this particular barge is a new venture, the couple has been in the hotel-boating business their entire lives, and it shows! The immaculate boat, with extra attention paid to the small details, is quiet beautiful. The three bedrooms, three bathrooms were obviously decorated by a British woman with a lot of flair! The living area is spacious, comfortable and yet so chic.
My husband and I loved sampling the locals Burgundy wines with some of the most beautiful scenery along the canal-banks, while the kids rode bikes along the flat tow path or splashed around in Max’s latest toy; a mini jacuzzi!
What appears to set them apart from the barges we shared the waterways with, was the casual approach Max and Bea had to boating. Almost all of the captains on board the other boats were not native to the area – nor country, and for me having his knowledge (and French accent) made the experience so much more authentic.
During my research, I found a number of barges available, but few that met my desire for a shorter than seven day cruise. Moreover, Wine and Water appears not to sell their barge through travel agents or resellers, therefore the commission costs are not baked on top of the price of the vacation, which made this trip much more affordable than all the others I researched.
If you are looking for a relaxing vacation on the water, sample fantastic local food and wine, look no further. Once the word gets out about this barge you will struggle getting a reservation. We look forward to going back on board Wine and Water in the future and experiencing a different stretch of the Bourgogne canal. Thank you Max and Beatrice for lifelong memories!
